If you can say anything, the danger is that that’s exactly what you’ll do. You’ll just say anything. So you have to be careful not to get lazy and not to become hubristic. You have to keep making yourself do things that you can’t do, or that you thought you couldn’t do. You can get lazy, you can get soft. You’ll write lazy, soft books.
